First CMU Sunday a Big Success

I don’t know about you but I’m always a little nervous when I attempt anything new.  I’m a little unsure of the outcome– like riding a bicycle for the first time–you never know if you’re going to ride or crash!

Well, I think I can truthfully say that our First CMU Sunday was a Big Success (at least from my point of view), which means we didn’t crash!  We had 26 faculty, staff and administrators from Central Methodist University who volunteered to visit 25 United Methodist Churches on Sunday, October 28th.  Many of the volunteers I heard from spoke well of the welcome and hospitality they received from UMC pastors and congregations, which I’ve also experience in my travels around the State of Missouri and elsewhere.  I have not heard from most of the pastors yet but I’ll be sending a CMU Sunday Survey to all the participating pastors and churches this week.

Our next CMU Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2013.  I already have a few churches and volunteers signed up to participate.  If you are a pastor or a lay leader from your church and would like to schedule a CMU Sunday for your congregation, then please call me at 660-248-6390 or email me at

I promise to read any comments on this blog and reply.  So, don’t be shy about writing back to me and posting anything you’d like to share.  I’d like to get your feedback on this blog and how to make it more interesting and appealing to you as a reader, especially since this is my first time to blog and only my second post.  I plan to read and learn how to be a good blogger but it is always good to hear from anyone who cares enough to take the time to write to me.

I invite you to check out our new Central Methodist University/United Methodist Church Connection web site page that will be going live soon.  The web address is:

Happy Advent!

PS  If you would like for me to fill the pulpit at your church for you, then please contact me by email or on my office phone.  I’m filling the pulpit for Kevin Shelton at Community UMC in Columbia on Saturday, January 12th, and Sunday, January 13th when we will have our next CMU Days there.

CMU Sunday, October 28, 2012

By Michael Pope, Central Methodist University

Central Methodist University (CMU) is always doing something new and different.  We aren’t afraid of change around here but we don’t just change for the sake of change.  We embrace change that is positive, beneficial, and future-oriented!

CMU Sunday on October 28, 2012 is a new and different approach for us.  This Sunday is an event that connects volunteers from CMU faculty and staff with local United Methodist Church (UMC) congregations .

On this Sunday, 28 CMU faculty and staff volunteers will be visiting UMC congregations that are primarily located in Mid Missouri within 100 miles of CMU.  The purpose of this special event is to foster more awareness of CMU and to give selected congregations an opportunity to connect with a member of the CMU community.

Volunteers will provide information about CMU to members of our UMC family, extend an invitation to visit your university and answer questions regarding CMU.  Prospective students and their families will have an opportunity to find out why you should choose CMU.

The ultimate goal of  CMU Sunday is to reinforce the relationship that already exists between CMU and The UMC and to enhance our partnership in Christian higher education and ministry.

If your church was not chosen for this event and you would like to be included in future CMU visits, then please contact me at or call me at (877) CMU-1854 and ask for extension 56390 or call me direct at (660) 248-6390 or on my cell phone at (660) 998-2224.

This special event is sponsored by The Office of Admission and The Office of Student Development at CMU.
